Description
Estate sale (my own): This is a Simonds Magnetic Base Indicator holder which I purchased in the 1990s. Simonds went out of business and Starrett bought out (or obtained rights) to their unique, pushbutton magnetic bases. Starrett then manufactured their bases in the U.S. The problem is Starrett put wimpy supporting posts and holding arms on their bases, compared to the original Simonds design, which featured massive posts and holding arms manufactured of Sheffield steel. In fact, the entire base is manufactured in Sheffield, England. These Simonds are 'old school' and are the most solid, beefiest magnetic bases that were ever manufactured, and they had the novel pushbutton bases. They also have the feature of an elongated, knurled fine adjustment knob. This is the small base model and the indicator holder takes 1/4" stems.
Consider these vintage to the max!
The base is new and never used. However there was some rust in one area which I removed the best I could using Scotchbrite (see two pics). I can vouch for the quality and hardness of Sheffield steel as it took a long time to remove the rust spot to a satisfactory state. The base does not come with the factory box.
